BOSTON, MA (December 14, 2015) — Penn Foster Education Group, Inc., a leader in innovative education solutions, announced that Penn Foster Education Group and Allen Interactions have won the 2015 Bronze Brandon Hall Excellence in Learning Award in the Best Use of Mobile Learning Category, for their jointly developed Mobile Memory Games app. The app features medical terminology games for online programs in the Allied Health and Veterinary Technology fields and has already been successfully deployed by Penn Foster Education Group, Inc.’s affiliate, Penn Foster, Inc. in its Allied Health and Veterinary Technology Associate’s Degree programs.

The entries were evaluated by a panel of veteran, independent senior industry experts, Brandon Hall Group Sr. Analysts and Executive Leadership based upon the following criteria: fit the need, design of the program, functionality, innovation, and overall measurable benefits.

“All of these winning programs deliver meaningful business results to their organizations,” said Rachel Cooke, Chief Operating Officer, Brandon Hall Group. “Winning an Excellence Award is a great honor, but the real winners are the organizations themselves and their customers and clients because of the innovation and customer focus they demonstrate.”

Excellence Awards winners will be honored at Brandon Hall Group’s HCM Excellence Conference January 27-29, 2016, at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Selected winners also will serve as presenters in the more than 20 breakout sessions during the 2½-day conference.

“We constantly strive to make E-learning relevant and engaging.” said Rachel Levy Wexler, Head of Educational Product Strategy at Penn Foster Education Group. “By making rote memorization fun and interactive, students not only learn medical terminology and vocabulary, but they also work to apply the language that they will be using daily, on the job. We’ve received tremendous feedback from our affiliate, Penn Foster, that its students are enjoying the module and are finding it useful.”

To develop a new learning module, Penn Foster Education Group first looked at its largest programs, and realized that medical terminology had the greatest need for vocabulary memorization. Penn Foster Education Group created two versions of the app, one for Allied Health programs and the other for the Veterinary Technology Associate's Degree program.

Penn Foster Education Group partnered with Allen Interactions to create its award-winning mobile learning app which provides a wide range of engaging interactive memory games, using responsive design and an open and easily modifiable database for an unlimited amount of content. Students are able to choose and filter by content and activity, track progress and results, and take advantage of continuous play capabilities with or without cell or wireless service.

“Our team is honored to have been recognized by The Brandon Hall Group for the Terminology Games app we developed with Penn Foster Education Group,” said Mike Drebenstedt, Lead Developer at Allen Interactions. “We’re proud to have created a responsive learning module that will be used to help improve the student learning experience, while continuing to push the envelope with learning technologies in this expanding sector.”

Penn Foster Education Group’s award-winning terminology games can be seamlessly integrated within a student’s online learning experience. In its deployment by Penn Foster, Penn Foster students access the module online, on their tablets, or on their mobile device through the school’s online Student Portal. Students can get more out of the topics covered in their courses with games and quizzes on pronunciation and spelling, test knowledge with digital flashcards, quiz themselves with helpful visual aides, and study using fill-in-the-blanks. The goal for this app is to engage students with the content and motivate them through interactive learning. The app was specifically designed to help students learn the terminology inside-out, which in turn helps students build confidence, knowledge, and credibility in the careers.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to have received a Brandon Hall award for our latest E-learning tool for students,” said Dara Warn, Chief Marketing Officer at Penn Foster. “By incorporating fun, engaging content into the Penn Foster online learning experience offered by schools like Penn Foster, we believe our students will be better able to retain the information, not only for their exams, but to apply in the workforce and entirety of their careers as medical professionals.”

SCRANTON, PA (December 11, 2015) — Penn Foster, Inc., a leader in career-focused online and blended education, was recently awarded the 2016 Military Friendly® School designation by Victory Media. Victory Media, a veteran-owned business and publisher of G.I. Jobs and the Guide to Military Schools, is the originator of Military Friendly® education and career resources for veterans and their families. This is the third year Penn Foster has been designated a Military Friendly® post-secondary school, specifically in the online-only category. Penn Foster was one of 38 online-only post-secondary schools awarded the 2016 Military Friendly® School designation.

“We are honored to be recognized as a Military Friendly designated school, as we actively strive to do all we can to serve military families, and provide them with the quality education they deserve,” said Mark Slayton, senior vice president, customer relationship management at Penn Foster. “We have a dedicated team that works exclusively to ensure each of our students who have enlisted, are on active duty, or are of veteran status have the resources and support they need to succeed and thrive in our learning environment. Spouses of our military students are eligible to benefit from our military student support network as well. Military students can benefit from our affordable, self-paced, flexible education model, and our aim is to continue to actively expand upon the resources for Penn Foster military students.”

Victory Media’s Military Friendly® ratings recognize colleges and companies with leading programs for veterans, members of the Armed Forces leaving military service and military spouses. This year’s lists highlight more than 1,400 Military Friendly® Schools and 220 Military Friendly® Employers exhibiting best practices in support of military students and employees, respectively. Institutions of higher learning competed for the title by completing an extensive survey covering ten indicators of success, including: flexibility for military students, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies.

The designated higher-education institutions have been recognized for exhibiting leading practices in recruiting and supporting post-military students. Penn Foster accepts MyCAA benefits for spouses of active duty military members, as well as VA benefits for military veterans, primarily the GI Bill. Penn Foster also has a special section of its online community dedicated to the military.

“We live in an era when the value of military service in the professional world is unquestioned and unmatched,” said Chris Hale, a Navy veteran and chairman and co-founder of Victory Media. “Veterans are graduates of the premier training institution in the world, but they need a consistent and predictable standard that lets them make good choices for major life decisions like where to work or where to enroll in school. The mission of Military Friendly® is to create maximum professional opportunity for them and other members of the military community.”

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (September 22, 2015) — Penn Foster College, a leader in career-focused online and hybrid education, announced that the Penn Foster Veterinary Academy Team has won the AVTE/Merial Award for Excellence in Team Teaching. Awarded at the biennial Association of Veterinary Technician Educators Symposium in Ontario, several members of the Penn Foster Veterinary Team were invited onstage to receive the award.

“The Penn Foster Veterinary Academy team members work as a dedicated team and focus on improving students’ learning experience and outcomes,” said the former president of AVTE, Monica Tighe, RVT, BA, MEd in her introductory remarks. “With over 10,000 active students in the program, the team depends on each other to assist, consult, advise and create a positive learning and work environment. These educators are versatile enough to reach students with various learning styles, and have demonstrated exceptional excellence in team teaching.”

The AVTE supports veterinary technicians as integral members of the veterinary healthcare team. Teachers who model respectful and effective teamwork in their own professional lives assist their students in integrating this skill into their own work pattern. The AVTE therefore offers the AVTE/Merial Award for Excellence in Team Teaching to educators who have demonstrated exceptional strength in working collaboratively to generate creative learning opportunities for their students. The AVTE encourages team work in the educational process as well as in clinical environments.

“Having the program recognized nationally is a wonderful feeling– we’re all thrilled,” said Dr. Hurrell. “Our team works very hard to deliver a great quality education to our students, and it’s an absolute honor to be recognized by fellow veterinary educators at the national level. Our faculty and their passion and commitment to our students are what I believe to be central to our program's success. Not only are they experts in the field of veterinary medicine, but they set a high standard for student achievement. Team members like Dr. Amanda Teter do such an amazing job of modelling servant leadership and helping fellow faculty members when situations arise.”

As a speaker at the symposium himself, Dr. Hurrell presented on how to put people skills into programs. The Penn Foster Veterinary Technician team prides themselves on cultivating a respectful and supportive environment for students and for faculty team members. In so doing, the team was recognized by the AVTE for exemplary collaboration and teamwork, and for effectively demonstrating creativity and vision in the development of innovative learning opportunities for veterinary technician students. All members of the Penn Foster Veterinary Technician Program team are proud members of AVTE, and will have the honor of presenting 2017 Merial Award for Excellence in Team Teaching at the next AVTE Symposium.

“Although we are still a young program, we’ve been able to position ourselves as one of the most robust vet tech programs – academically and clinically – in the country. The kinds of students that we have applying to our program are high-quality and ambitious, and have often been in the field for years but are looking for a degree and to become a Credentialed Veterinary Technician,” said Dr. Hurrell. “This award means so much for our students and for the program. During both the 2014 as well as the 2015 academic years, we graduated over 100 students. This year, we’re expecting to graduate our largest class ever. I couldn’t be more proud, and am excited for what’s to come.”

Connie Dempsey, Penn Foster’s Chief Certification and Licensing Officer, Receives the Distinguished Service Award; Penn Foster Graduate Tiffany Brown Named One of 2014’s Outstanding Graduates and Famous Alumni.

Scranton (April 24, 2014) — Penn Foster, a leader in career-focused online and blended education designed to address the skills gap in America, is proud to announce that the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) has recognized two of Penn Foster’s superstars. Connie Dempsey, Penn Foster’s Chief Certification and Licensing Officer, has been awarded DETC’s Distinguished Service Award, while Penn Foster graduate Tiffany Brown has been named one of 2014’s Outstanding Graduates and Famous Alumni.  The DETC is a private, non-profit organization that operates as a national accreditor of institutions that primarily offer distance education.

The Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service award is given to individuals working at a DETC-accredited institution for their special outstanding service that has enhanced the image of distance education or significantly furthered the work of the DETC. Since 1961, 85 individuals have received this award.

“I’m truly honored to have been selected by the DETC for its Distinguished Service Award,” said Dempsey. “My work with the DETC has never been for the awards or prestige, but to create standardization and continued positive growth in the online education industry.”

Dempsey has been a standard bearer for the DETC for over two decades. She has served in an educational leadership role not just with Penn Foster, but also through her tireless efforts to serve the DETC. Dempsey joined Penn Foster in 1988 after serving as a teacher and in various positions in education, business, and industry. She is responsible for academic policies, oversight of faculty, instructional activities, regulatory compliance, and strategic direction.

Outstanding Graduates and Famous Alumni Award
For the 31st consecutive year, DETC has honored the fine work of its accredited institutions and showcase the significant accomplishments of graduates and alumni. Thirty-three exceptional graduates were selected by the distance education institutions they attended. Selection criteria included the graduates’ academic records and the level and quality of their contributions to society and to their chosen professions.

Brown, a 2013 graduate of Penn Foster’s Dental Assistant Program, was celebrated by the DETC for her participation in the New Mexico Mission of Mercy, a free, two day dental clinic, created for individuals who cannot afford dental care.  In two days, Brown, a dental assistant in her hometown of Alamogordo, N.M, joined more than 1,300 volunteers to help create 952 new smiles, which would have cost $586,653.

“Being recognized for my work post-graduation from Penn Foster really shows all students out there that following your dreams will take you places you never expected,” said Brown. “Participating in the New Mexico Mission of Mercy was the most fulfilling experience I’ve ever had in my entire life and without the help and knowledge I obtained from Penn Foster, I would never have been able to be a part of such a wonderful event.”

Penn Foster Selected as a Finalist for ICMI's Global Contact Center Awards

Online Student Community Nominated for Best Use of an Emerging Channel.

Scranton (March 17, 2014) — Penn Foster, a leader in career-focused online and blended education designed to address the skills gap in America, has been selected as a finalist in ICMI’s Global Contact Center Awards Best Use of an Emerging Channel category, recognized for its groundbreaking online student Community. The ICMI Global Contact Center Awards Program honors and recognizes the companies, contact centers and individuals that provide a platform for leadership, vision, innovation and strategic accomplishments for the industry.

“We are honored to be selected as a finalist for this prestigious, global award,” said Joe Gagnon, Penn Foster President and Chief Operating Officer. “We continually hear from students how the Online Community is an important part of their student experience, providing the support from peers and faculty they need to progress in their studies and achieve their goals. It’s gratifying to see our Community recognized as a game-changing educational resource for our students, while having a significant impact on our business.”

Penn Foster created the online Community for its students as a response to the school’s rapidly growing enrollment and rising cost per interaction between students and Penn Foster’s staff and faculty. At the time, the school’s communication avenues were limited to telephone, email and—to a lesser extent—chat. However, the school’s leaders noticed that students were beginning to turn to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter for answers to questions.

From there, the idea of the “Penn Foster Community” was born.

Initially launched in 2010 as “eCampus,” the site allowed students to connect with peers to share experiences, learn tips and meet with students in their same field of study. In July 2012, Penn Foster upgraded the site to the “Penn Foster Community,” which featured a wider offering of support services, including: a community map for students to find others in their area to connect with, polls, student blogs, organized discussions and groups by area of study, a calendar of events, documents, video links and much more. Then in June 2013, Penn Foster launched a badge/gamification system through Bunchball, a gamification and loyalty app for websites.

A year after implementation, the new Community had 64,622 users—a 200 percent growth. By the end of 2013, emails were reduced by more than 40 percent, and the cost per interaction dropped an average of $1.06 each year since 2010.

The ICMI Global Contact Center Awards program is the most comprehensive awards program dedicated to the customer management industry. For more than 10 years, ICMI, the leading global provider of comprehensive resources for customer management professionals has organized and managed this awards program.

The winner of the ICMI Global Contact Center Award will be announced at ICMI’s Global Call Center Awards Dinner and Ceremony on Wednesday, May 7, 2014.
