While a smart board was once considered cutting edge and a coveted classroom addition, they, along with whiteboards and other digital displays, are now often considered staples. Many schools supply their students with tablets or computers and even use apps and learning portals to assist in lessons. Not every student has access to these technologies, however, putting them at a disadvantage. While most students do have access to some kind of device, not all access is equal.

The impact of a lack of access to technology on learners

When students don’t have the necessary access to the technology their peers have, their academic performance can be impacted. They may struggle completing their homework and doing research for assignments to the best of their ability without internet access or devices capable of downloading the latest learning apps. While libraries are always an option, their hours may not work for all students or, more likely, all students’ parents/guardians. Furthermore, the increase in using online learning portals can make it difficult for these students to get assignments submitted on time.

There’s plenty that can be done to combat technology accessibility. Government initiatives, such as technology grants, can help schools support their low-income students who may not be able to afford it on their own. Schools can also communicate any community programs available, such as non-profits or organizations that provide technology resources, to help bridge the gap for these students.

Schools can also partner with tech companies to provide affordable devices and internet plans for their students. They can work with local businesses as well to participate in outreach and provide resources or training opportunities.

To be truly inclusive, educators should keep in mind that not every student has access to these resources and support their students by ensuring there are non-technological ways students can submit assignments or complete work if need be. Students should be given the option to print any online readings out using their school’s resources to ensure they are able to access their work without home internet. Increased resources can prevent a lack of technological resources at home impacting a student’s ability to get their work done.
